Indulge in the rich flavors of our Authentic Gyudon recipe, a beloved Japanese beef bowl that will satisfy your cravings. Thinly sliced beef is cooked in a savory soy-based sauce, resulting in tender and flavorful meat that perfectly complements a bed of steamed rice. Discover how to recreate this comforting and delicious Japanese dish in your own kitchen.

Ingredients

1 pound thinly sliced beef (such as ribeye or sukiyaki-cut beef)
1 large onion, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
2 tablespoons sake, Optional (Japanese rice wine)
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup dashi stock (or substitute with beef or vegetable broth)
4 servings of steamed rice
Optional toppings: sliced green onions, pickled ginger, nori seaweed, or beni shoga (pickled red ginger)

Instructions

1
In a large pan or skillet, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and cook until softened and slightly caramelized.
2
Push the onions to the side of the pan and add the beef slices. Cook the beef until browned on both sides.
3
Push the onions to the side of the pan and add the beef slices. Cook the beef until browned on both sides.
4
Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and onions in the pan. Stir gently to coat the ingredients. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes until the beef is cooked through and the flavors are well combined.
5
Divide the steamed rice into four bowls. Scoop the gyudon mixture on top of the rice.
6
Optionally, garnish with sliced green onions, pickled ginger, nori seaweed, or beni shoga for added flavor and presentation.
7
Serve the Gyudon hot and enjoy! I like serving a simple bowl of miso soup on the side.
