Funnel Cakes and Corn Dogs

Buttermilk Corn Dogs and Funnel Cakes

Summer isn’t complete without a delicious homemade buttermilk corn dog or funnel cake. These easy recipes will be a hit at your next get together with family and friends!

Ingredients

Corn Dogs: 6-8 hot dogs
1 cup all flour
2/3 cups cornmeal
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cup buttermilk
oil for deep frying
wooden sticks
Funnel Cakes: 3 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder

Instructions

1
For the Corn Dogs: Heat oil in your deep fryer to 360 degrees.
2
In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and whisk together.
3
In a small bowl whisk the buttermilk and egg together. Pour the buttermilk and egg mixture into your dry ingredients. Mix together until smooth.
4
Dip the hot dogs in the batter and shake off any excess batter. Deep fry until golden brown.
5
Remove the corn dogs from the deep fryer and place on a plate that has been lined with paper towels.
6
Allow the corn dogs to cool slightly. When cool enough to touch, insert the wooden stick into one end of the dog.
7
Serve with your favorite condiments and enjoy! I like to make a simple dipping sauce of 1/3 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 1 tbsp dill pickle relish. Mix everything together and serve with the corn dogs.
8
For the Funnel Cakes: Heat the oil to about 370 degrees.
9
In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and whisk together.
10
In a separate bowl, whisk together all of the wet ingredients.
11
Add the dry ingredients to your wet ingredients and whisk to combine. Adjust milk levels if needed.
12
Pour the batter into a piping bag and snip off the tip of the bag.
13
Drizzle the batter into the hot oil covering all holes. The drizzling should be random and create a lattice work.
14
Cook until the edges have become golden and carefully turn the funnel cake over. Be careful not to splash hot oil.
15
Continue cooking the funnel cake until both sides are golden brown.
16
Remove and drain on a paper towel. Serve with powdered sugar, ice cream, or fruit toppings. Enjoy!
