Southern Buttermilk Biscuits
Southern buttermilk biscuits are perfect with butter and jam, sausage and gravy, chicken salads or a myriad of other toppings. However you like to eat them, making them is easy and certainly delicious!
Ingredients
1 stick frozen butter ( 8 tbsp )
2 1/2 cups self rising flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg for egg wash
Instructions
1
Preheat oven to 450 degreeās.
2
Grate the frozen butter into a large bowl. Add the self rising flour and salt to the bowl.
3
Gently toss the flour, salt and grated frozen butter together to combine. Place in the freezer for about 5 minutes to make sure the butter is COLD.
4
After 5 minutes, remove the flour mixture from the freezer and add the buttermilk. Gently mix everything together until combined. If needed, add additional buttermilk to create a soft dough.
5
Flour your work surface and gently roll the dough mass into a 10x12 rectangle. Fold the dough into thirds like your would fold a piece of paper in thirds.
6
Rotate the dough a quarter turn clockwise and repeat four times.
7
Roll the dough about 1/2 inch thick and cut into rounds.
8
Place the cut biscuits onto a greased baking dish. Whisk the egg and brush the egg on top to ensure the biscuits turn golden brown.
9
Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 - 12 minutes or until golden. Remove, serve with your favorite dishes and enjoy!
