Patatas Bravas Crispy Spanish Tapas with Spicy Sauce

Patatas Bravas Crispy Spanish Tapas with Spicy Sauce

Patatas Bravas is a classic Spanish tapas dish featuring crispy fried potatoes tossed in a bold, smoky, and slightly spicy tomato-based sauce. Served with a creamy aioli, it’s the perfect appetizer or side dish for any occasion.

Ingredients

For the Potatoes: 2 large Green Giant russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
1 tsp salt
½ tsp smoked paprika
For the Bravas Sauce: 2 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp hot paprika (or cayenne, for extra spice)
1 tbsp tomato paste
½ cup canned crushed tomatoes
½ cup chicken or vegetable broth
1 tsp red wine vinegar
Salt to taste
For the Aioli (Optional but Recommended): ½ cup mayonnaise
1 garlic clove, grated
1 tbsp lemon juice
½ tsp salt

Instructions

1
Prepare the Potatoes: Place the diced potatoes in cold water for 15 minutes to remove excess starch. Drain and pat dry.
2
Make the Bravas Sauce: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the onion until soft. Add garlic, smoked paprika, and hot paprika, stirring for 30 seconds.
3
Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, and broth. Simmer for 10 minutes until thickened. Blend for a smooth texture (optional). Stir in vinegar and season with salt.
4
Make the Aioli: In a small bowl, mix mayo, grated garlic, lemon juice, and salt. Set aside.
5
Fry the Potatoes: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry potatoes in batches until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Alternatively, coat potatoes in olive oil and air fry in your air fryer or roast until golden brown in the oven. Drain on paper towels and toss with salt and smoked paprika.
6
Assemble: Toss or drizzle the potatoes with bravas sauce. Serve with aioli on the side or drizzled on top.
