Menchi Katsu, Minced Beef Cutlet

Menchi Katsu (Minced Beef Cutlet)

This deep fried, golden brown ground meat cutlet is a favorite throughout Japan. I simply add it to my food processor and let it do the work of blending it together. Shape, fry and serve…Menchi Katsu is a great idea for dinner!

Ingredients

1/2 pound ground hamburger
1/2 pound ground pork
1/2 onion, chopped
1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 tbsp milk
1 large egg
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground pepper
Vegetable oil for deep frying
For coating the cutlets: 1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, whisked
1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs

Instructions

1
In the bowl of your food processor, combine the hamburger, ground pork, chopped onion, panko breadcrumbs, milk, egg, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Pulse everything together to combine.
2
Shape the meat mixture into 6 balls ( toss the balls between your hands a few times to help remove excess air that could cause them to fall apart when they are fried) and flatten them into an oval shape about 1/2 inch thick.
3
Dredge the shaped menchi katsu in the flour, dip in the eggs and finally dredge them in the panko bread crumbs to coat.
4
Heat about 4 inches of oil up to 340 degree’s. Deep fry the menchi katsu for approximately 4-5 minutes or until golden brown on both sides. Serve with finally shredded cabbage, tomato wedges and Tonkatsu sauce on the side.
