Homemade Pies

Homemade pies are easy to make. The crust is the only thing that’s scary to make and truly is the one part of a homemade pies you need to master for success.

Ingredients

4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup shortening
1 tsp salt
1 cup water
Prepared pie filling for 2 pies

Instructions

1
In a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of your food processor) combine the flour, shortening, and salt together. Blend (or pulse if using your food processor) together with your fingers or a pastry cutter. Continue blending until the flour and shortening resemble course meal.
2
Add the water and blend together just until the mass pulls together into a soft dough.
3
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about an hour.
4
Once the dough has chilled, divide into four equal portions and roll out into disks that are about ¼ inch thick.
5
Carefully fold dough in half and place over pie tin. Unfold the dough and press into the pie tin trim and flute the crust edges.
6
Use your favorite filling and fill the prepared pie tin and roll out the top crust, cut a steam vent in the top of the crust, brush with an egg wash and sprinkle with sugar and pumpkin pie spice .
7
Bake the pies in a preheated 350 degree oven until they are golden brown (about 45 minutes).
8
Remove from the oven, cool, serve and enjoy!
