Ingredients

1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped bell pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 pkg sloppy joe seasoning package (see below)
1/2 cup ketchup
1 small can tomato paste
1 cup water
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon mustard
2 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Hamburger buns

Instructions

1
Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up into crumbles with a spatula. Drain off excess fat.
2
Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, minced garlic and seasoning package to the skillet. Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables have softened. If you choose not to add a seasoning pkg, add 1 tsp each of granulated garlic, onion powder, chili powder, cumin, paprika and 1 tbsp cornstarch.
3
In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, tomato paste, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, soy sauce, salt, and black pepper. Pour the mixture into the skillet.
4
Stir everything together until well combined. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
5
While the Sloppy Joe mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns if desired.
6
Once the Sloppy Joe mixture has thickened, remove from heat.
7
Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each hamburger bun. Top with the other half of the bun.
8
Serve the Sloppy Joes warm with a slice of your favorite cheese on top and enjoy!
