Cherry Turnovers
Delicious cherry turnovers are fun to make and a great idea for dessert. I simply use my favorite pie crust recipe, fill with prepared cherry pie filling and bake them off in the oven. You family and friends are going to love these cherry turnovers!
Ingredients
For the Dough:
1 cup fat (butter, shortening, lard…your choice)
3 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup water
For the Filling:
Prepared cherry pie filling
For the Frosting:
2 cups powdered sugar
2 tbsp heavy cream (more or less)
1 tsp vanilla
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 350 degree’s.
2
To make the pastry dough, to the bowl of your food processor, add the fat, flour and salt. Pulse everything together until the fat has been cut into the flour and the mixture looks like coarse corn meal.
3
Transfer the flour mixture to a large bowl and add the water mixing everything together just until combined.
4
Roll the pastry dough out and cut the dough into 5 inch squares.
5
Spoon a bout 2 tbsp of prepared cherry pie filling on the cut pastry square and fold on corner over to another corner, forming a triangle. Using a fork, press the edges down around the triangle to seal the edges.
6
Place the prepared cherry turnovers on a parchment lined baking sheet. Prepare a simple egg wash (1 egg whisked together with 1 tbsp water) and brush the turnovers with the egg wash. Sprinkle with sugar and bake in the oven for about 25 minutes or until they are golden brown.
7
Remove the turnovers from the oven and let them cool while you prepare the powdered sugar frosting. combine the powdered sugar, heavy cream and vanilla in a large bowl whisking everything together until combined and smooth.
8
Drizzle the powdered sugar frosting over the cooled cherry turnovers, serve and enjoy!
