Brazilian Shepherds Pie

Brazilian Shepherds Pie (Escondidinho de Carne)

A delicious shepherds pie is a great idea for dinner. With all of the comfort flavors, this Brazilian version will be a new family favorite.

Ingredients

For the Potatoes: 4 medium size Russet potatoes, finely diced
2 cups milk
2 egg yolks
1 cup parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
4 tbsp butter
1 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp salt
2 tsp black pepper
For the Hamburger Mixture: 1 pound ground hamburger
1/2 pound ground pork
1 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
1/2 cup finely chopped carrots
1/4 cup Italian Style tomato paste
1/2 cup red wine
2 tsp salt
2 tsp black pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Olive oil

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400 degree’s.

For the potatoes, heat a large pot on the stove and add the prepared add the potatoes and the milk. If needed, add additional milk so the potatoes are just about covered. Loosely cover the pan and boil the potatoes until tender.

Once the potatoes are fully cooked, mash the potatoes with any additional milk. Add the egg yolks, shredded parmesan cheese, butter, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Mix everything together until well combined, set aside.

Heat a 9-10 inch cast iron pan (or any oven safe pan) on the stove and add enough olive oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan.

Add the milk and throughly cook through. When meat is cooked, add the chopped onion, celery, carrots, Italian style tomato paste, red wine, salt and black pepper. Sauté everything together for about 5 minutes or until the carrots are tender.

Evenly spread the hamburger mixture on the bottom of the pan and sprinkle with the shredded cheddar cheese. Spread the potato mixture on top of the hamburger mixture and spread the potatoes evenly over the top. Sprinkle the top with extra shredded parmesan cheese.

Place the prepared Brazilian Shepard's Pie into the oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes or until the to is golden brown.

Remove from the oven, cut and serve. Enjoy!
